Essays on the malt liquor question ...

By Brewers' Industrial Exhibition. New York: Francis Hart & Co., 1876.

This pamphlet was published for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876.  Following an introduction that describes and illustrates the several halls of the exposition, it focuses on the Brewers’ Industrial Exhibition building featured in a full-page frontispiece.  The brewers may well have required and deserved their own large and elaborate building, as the text tells us that their exhibition featured not only the making of beer, ale, etc. but also the taste-testing of same, which would surely have attracted large crowds.  The book assures its audience that “eminent physicians, chemists, and others” favor “beer and ale as light, wholesome beverages."

Condition and Treatment:

This is a late 19th century pamphlet that is side-sewn.  The pamphlet is housed in an acid-free envelope that does not provide adequate protection.  Conservators will disbind the pamphlet.  The side sewing is creating pressure on the brittle paper that may lead to future damage.  The pamphlet will be re-sewn through the fold so that it will open flat.  A custom enclosure will be created to house this fragile item.
