If You Want to Build a House
If you want to build a house
A book that accompanied the 1946 exhibit "If You Want To Build A House" exhibit at The Museum of Modern Art. The book highlights mid-century modern architects such as Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, Philip Johnson, and Richard Neutra as well as Prairie School architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The book describes the concepts of modern architecture from the prospective of a potential home builder. The chapters, with titles like Space for Living, Plenty of Light, and The Use of Material, walk the home builder through the process of commissioning a home in the modern architectural style.
The 20th century publishers paper binding is in poor condition. The spine is detached and in pieces. The paper binding is worn at the corners and edges. Conservators will create a new spine using toned Japanese paper. The pieces of the original spine will then be re-attached. A custom enclosure will be created to house this fragile item.
