The Smithsonian Institution Libraries enjoys a unique and dual role within the Institution itself. On one hand, the Libraries is an internal service provider, meeting the needs of the Institution's curators and researchers. On the other hand, it is a public educator in its own right because of its active exhibition program and its progressive Digital Library initiative, which brings important, rare and valuable works from the Libraries' collections to the widest audience possible through the World Wide Web.

The newest addition to the Smithsonian Institution Libraries is the Joseph F. Cullman 3rd Library of Natural History. It houses, for the first time in one place, the Smithsonian Libraries' entire collection of approximately 10,000 rare and valuable natural history books and manuscripts. The Cullman Library, located in the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, offers easy access to natural history scientists, museum curators, researchers, students and visitors.

"An Odyssey in Print: Adventures in the Smithsonian Libraries" turns the visitor into an explorer by opening the doors to the extraordinary collections of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries. "Odyssey" debuted under the title "Voyages: A Smithsonian Libraries Exhibition" at Manhattan's Grolier Club in spring 2001. It opens in the Smithsonian Libraries Gallery on the first floor of the National Museum of American History, Behring Center on May 16.
