The Day-Glo Designer's Guide
The Day-Glo Designer's Guide.
Put on your sunglasses!
This 1969 trade catalog from the Dayglo Corp. was published during the heyday of the psychedelic era, but fluorescent paint and pigments were invented and used decades earlier by the Switzer Brothers. Fluorescent dyes were used in industrial applications for manufacturing, military and safety purposes. This catalog details the history of flourescents, as well as diving into its commercial and fine arts uses, like the series of Day-Glo serigraph prints of Marilyn Monroe by Bert Stern (originally published in Avant Garde magazine).
Day-Glo colors are shades of orange, pink, green, and yellow which are so bright that they seem to glow. Undeniably eye-catching, they found their way into advertising, packaging, graphic design and the fine arts. Though a consummate symbol of psychedelia and its time, Day-Glo and the Sixties are back in fashion, with its wild colors seen in accessories, clothing, and signage.
