Camille Flammarion (1842-1925) was a French astronomer and founder of the French Astronomical Society. His keen fascination with the possibility of life on other planets led him to pen both fictional and factual works exploring the subject. Les terres du ciel presents the scientific thought of the time on the subject of extraterrestrial life, but does not shy away from more fantastic ideas. It contains actual photographic prints of the lunar surface, as well as, numerous imaginative illustrations speculating on the landscapes, conditions, and inhabitants of other worlds.
The sewing is still intact on the binding, but the hinge of the loose front cover needs to be reinforced. Conservators will also carefully lift the original spine covering and reinforce the spine lining which has cracked.
