Letter fall

By Elizabeth Ashcroft. San Francisco: 2016.

San Francisco artist Elizabeth Ashcroft created this one-of-a-kind piece from a thrifted text. Its hand torn pages cascade and flow through a “shallow ravine” evoking the sensation of approaching a waterfall. Braced open through the use of a cord accented with glass beads, words and sentences spill over the edges of pages creating a sculpture made of paper and ink. A palimpsest, or altered book, Letter Fall is intended to be viewed simultaneously as a book and an artistic piece, and as such is an ideal example of an artists' book in which the maker intends for the book to be a work of art in itself.

Condition and Treatment:

A modern artists' book created out of a repurposed publisher's book. The pages are fanned open with a bead between each page. The edges of the pages have been torn and on each page a sentence or word has been cut and folded, so that it extends past the edge of the pages.  Conservators will create a custom box which includes a new mount board to house this fragile artists' book.
