Manuale di varj ornamenti componenti la serie de' vasi antichi : si' di marmo che di bronzo esistenti in Roma e fuori, v. 1-3

By Carlo Antonini. In Roma: Nella Stamperia de Romanis, 1821.

This early and only edition consists of an illustrated three volume study of Roman vessels drawn and engraved by Italian artist and editor Carlo Antonin (born circa 1740). Volume one features vessels in the Pio-Clementine and Chiaramonti Museum at the Vatican; volume 2 shows items in the Capitoline Museum and the galleries of Rome; and volume 3 has images of other antique “Rome district” vases. This book includes more than 195 full-page images illustrating variant forms and decoration on Roman vases and vessels. It is a remarkable visual resource for Neo-classical designers, as well as those studying Roman antiquities.

Condition and Treatment:

This book has an early 19th century half bound vellum and faux leather binding. The boards are held on by cords and the spine is detaching. The endpapers are very brittle and held together with pressure sensitive tape. Conservators will remove and repair the cover, consolidate the spine, and replace the endpapers. The textblock will then be re-cased in the original binding.
