Report on the collections of natural history made in the Antarctic regions during the voyage of the "Southern Cross"

By British Museum (Natural History). London: Printed by order of the Trustees, 1902.

The Southern Cross Expedition (otherwise known as the British Antarctic Expedition) holds a special place in history: it was the first British venture of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, the first to ever winter on the Antarctic mainland, the first to visit the Great Ice Barrier in over 50 years, and a pioneer of Antarctic survival and travel techniques. Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole, even stated that the expedition’s work helped him and other explorers. In this volume, the reader will find the results of that voyage. They will learn, in meticulous detail, about the skulls of Antarctic seals, colonies of sea-dwelling invertebrates, and sinuous marine worms. Peppered throughout are charts, drawings, and photographs to enhance the research material. One of the more notable features of the volume are the gorgeous colored plates of animals by famed Danish artist Henrik Gronvold.
