Synopsis methodica fungorum.

Synopsis methodica fungorum : sistens enumerationem omnium huc vsque detectarum specierum, cum breuibus descriptionibus nec non synonymis et obseruationibus selectis

By C. H. Persoon. Gottingae: Apud Henricum Dieterich, 1801.

An impoverished recluse who never held an official or academic position, Persoon nevertheless managed to build on a good education in Leiden and Göttingen to form a significant herbarium and scientific library on fungi (mushrooms) and to publish works that are considered the basis of modern mycology. Our copy of this classic work, the starting point for the nomenclature of several major groups (including puffballs), includes stilted plates.

Condition and Treatment:

Contemporary marbled paper over board with a red leather spine label.  The back board and plates are hanging by a single cord.  The spine cover is completely detached, held in place by modern pressure-sensitive tape.  Conservators will remove the tape. Create a Mylar L-sleeve to house the spine.  Reattach the last section with an inner Japanese paper hinge.  Reattach the back board with an outer Japanese paper hinge. Create a custom clam-shell box to ensure long-term protection of the volume.
