Captain Sir John Franklin, in search of a Northwest Passage through the Arctic from the Atlantic to the Pacific, set sail in 1845 and was never heard from again. The disappearance of his two ships — the rather ominously named H.M.S. Erebus and H.M.S. Terror — with over 100 officers and crew prompted numerous expeditions to search for and, it was hoped, rescue his party. Elisha Kane, a physician serving in the U.S. Navy, was appointed senior medical officer on the First Grinnell Expedition that set off in search of Franklin in 1850-1851.
Condition and treatment:
The volume has a full cloth-covered case binding. The sewing is intact, but the upper joint has weakened where the cover is attached to the spine. Conservators will reinforce the upper joint with toned linen to match the original cloth covering, and further strengthen the inside of the front cover with Japanese paper.
