Handwörterbuch der Mineralogie und Geognosie / / bearbeitet und herausgegeben von Dr. Karl Friedrich Alexander Hartmann ; mit 10 lithographirten Tafeln

By Carl Hartmann. Leipzig: F.A. Brockhaus, 1828.

Raised in one of the most important mining districts in Germany, Carl Hartmann (1796-1863) served as Commissioner of Mines in Brunswick through the 1820s and 1830s, and published more than 100 works on the subjects of mineralogy and mining. His books are important for their comprehensiveness and detailed technical knowledge and served to disseminate the latest information and technological advances to European audiences. Arranged alphabetically with an extensive bibliography, the present work is the first edition of one of the most detailed manuals on mineralogy of its time, held by only seven libraries in the U.S. The ten lithographed plates illustrate over 300 crystal forms.  This copy is interleaved with contemporary annotations.
