This songbook cover is for the tune, "Since Katy the Waitress Became an Aviatress." It shows a female air pilot flying a biplane and dropping daisies on a group of men waving up at her. The song lyrics tell Katy's story as she finds adventure in the air and tell about the young men in the town who have all fallen in love with Katy since she has become a pilot, or "aviatress' as female pilots used to be called. When this song was published in 1919, it was unusual for women to become pilots, but since then, many women have taken to the air. One of the most famous pilots in history was Amelia Earhart, who became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932! When she wasn't flying, Earhart spent a lot of her career encouraging young women to become airplane pilots themselves. Female pilots sure have come a long way since Elisabeth Thible became the first woman to pilot an aircraft when she flew in an untethered hot air balloon over Lyon France in 1784!
