Butterflies are beautiful creatures with wings that can come in a variety of colors. Their wings seem to reflect and shine as they fly through the air. Even though butterflies are tiny creatures, they are covered by thousands of scales. These scales are so small that you need a microscope to see them! The scales are layered on the butterfly, which allows for a reflection when light hits the wings. One scale might shine red, while another shines blue. This could allow a person looking at the butterfly to see purple or a combination of all three colors as the butterfly flies. This effect of iridescence can also be seen on fish, seashells, and even peacocks. It happens when light is reflected more than once across a surface. These numerous reflections strengthen the colors and make butterflies the beautiful creatures we see.
