Although butterflies have the natural ability to live a relatively long life, their predators have made scientists predict a short life for many of them. The average lifespan of a butterfly in the wild is two to fourteen days after they emerge from their chrysalis. The Mourning Cloak butterfly has been known to live for almost a year! Butterflies that migrate during different seasons tend to survive longer because of this adaptation to the climate. As with humans, female butterflies often live a short time longer than their male counterparts.
