A butterfly’slife cycle is far different than any other animal. A butterfly begins its life as an egg. Within two weeks of the egg being laid, a caterpillar will emerge. The journey a caterpillar takes to become a butterfly is called metamorphosis. The caterpillar eats and eats until the time comes to form a chrysalis. In order to do this, the caterpillar finds a leaf, hangs upside down from it, and weaves silk to form a case around its body. This process can take months! When the caterpillar has developed into a butterfly, it will emerge from the chrysalis. The life cycle is now complete, and the butterfly will begin the cycle all over again by laying a new set of eggs.
