As the seasons change, the weather can be quite harsh on a delicate butterfly. Luckily, butterflies have various ways they adapt and survive the weather! The lifecycle of some species of butterflies is timed so that the butterfly is not out in the cold weather, but is in the egg or larva stage for the coldest months. These stages of life are much stronger against the elements than a delicate butterfly. Other species of butterflies will hibernate by staying dormant. This dormancy uses very little energy and allows the butterflies to save energy and stay warm. Other types of butterflies migrate to a warmer areas. This migration allows the butterflies to survive and ensures them of a food source. The Monarch Butterfly will make up to a 3000-mile journey to migrate south to warmer climates in the autumn and returning north in the spring.
