You are welcome to make an appointment via email, telephone, or fax. There are many ways to get to the library. The closest metro station is Anacostia Station on the Green Line. From the metro station, you can take the W-2/W-3 bus for less than $2, and it will drop you off in front of the museum. If you choose to drive, we have free parking. The walk from the metro station takes only 30 minutes, and there are several steep hills.

The library is located on the second floor of the museum, in the staff-only area. To gain access for your scheduled appointment, you may ask any Anacostia Community Museum security officer to call the library. Someone from the library will meet you at security, and bring you to your appointment. You may be asked to submit a drivers license in exchange for a visitors badge. Your bags may be searched upon exiting the building. During the week, the library is staffed with one librarian and one library technician. Both the librarian and the technician rotate to another location, so it is necessary to make an appointment in advance so they can adjust their rotation to meet your research needs.

Borrowing privileges are listed: here.

Meals: this Smithsonian museum does not have a cafe, snack shop, or designated eatery in the building. Please plan your research visit accordingly.

Summer: the only Smithsonian museum located across the street from an outdoor swimming pool.

We look forward to seeing you during your next visit to Washington, D.C.!
