The Biodiversity Heritage Library will host a two­day conference titled “Life and Literature” Nov. 14 and 15 at the Field Museum in Chicago. The conference will unite librarians, biologists, computer scientists, publishers and students to set the agenda for biodiversity literature digitizing and its networked environment for the next five years.

The Smithsonian Institution Libraries, in a continuing partnership with Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press, has converted select publications from the Smithsonian Contributions and Studies Series to digital formats for use on Kindles, Nooks and other e­readers.

In February the Smithsonian Institution Libraries deposited the 10,000th publication in the Smithsonian Digital Repository, part of the Smithsonian Research Online program. This milestone was achieved with a collaborative paper by Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute researcher Ben Hirsch and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo geneticist Jesus Maldonado.

Two new members have joined the Biodiversity Heritage Library: Cornell University Library (Ithaca, N.Y.) and the U.S. Geological Survey Library (Reston, Va.). These two institutions will contribute to the digitization of historical science literature in the BHL collections. All material will be online, free and available to the public.

The Smithsonian Institution Libraries will award grants to Dibner Library Resident Scholars and Baird Society Resident Scholars for the 2012 calendar year. These competitive short­term grants are offered for one to six months to historians, librarians and bibliographers, as well as predoctoral and postdoctoral students, with an approved research project.
