Andy Warhol's Index (Book)
Andy Warhol's index (book)
Giant rainbow noses, alleged tabs of LSD, a pop-up castle, and a can of Hunt’s tomato paste. This book has it all. The infinitely cool world of Andy Warhol and his Factory is captured in Andy Warhol’s Index, a book that mixes gritty, edgy pop art and the interactivity of children books. There are aspects that you would expect to find in an art book such as snippets of interviews and scores of black and white photos of Warhol and his friends and colleagues. But it is the unexpected features that make this book truly rare and charming, including feats of paper engineering, a (formerly) working accordion, and Velvet Underground records. With so many details, finding a complete copy of Andy Warhol’s Index is quite rare; the Smithsonian Libraries' copy retains all of the original features.
An innovative book created by Andy Warhol in the late 1960s. The cover is in good condition with a reflective, hologram front cover. The book contains 10 interactive items including pop-up elements, a balloon, and a 45 R.P.M. Velvet Underground disk. The sewing is loose but intact. There are two elements in need of repair: the balloon and a disk on a spring. The rubber in the balloon has degraded and discolored the pages of the book. The balloon was wrapped in a paper enclosure that is now adhered to the balloon. The spring has detached from the disk. Conservators will repair the spring mechanism and remove the paper from the balloon. A custom enclosure will be created for the volume.
