By Georg Eberhard Rumpf. Amsterdam: Jan Roman de Jonge ..., 1741.

This is one of the most famous books on shells, by one of the most important naturalists of the pre-Linnaean period. Rumpf was employed by the Dutch East India Company in the mid-1600s and sent to the island of Amboina (Ambon) in what is now Eastern Indonesia. His interests in natural history produced a classic work on the botany of the region, as well as, this one on its marine life. His own illustrations for the work were lost in a fire in Amboina in 1687.  The book's bookplates are based on drawings subsequently made by Maria Sybilla Merian.

Condition and Treatment:

Bound in half-sheepskin with marbled-paper over the boards, this volume shows significant wear and damage: the boards and end-leaves are detached; the head of the spine covering is detached; and the spine covering is coming loose. In addition, there are some paper tears in the text-block. Conservators will re-back the volume with a new leather spine, re-attach the boards to it, and perform paper repairs to re- attach loose leaves to the text-block.
