By F. L. Gillette and Hugo Ziemann, translated to German by Hedwig Voss. New York: Das Morgen-Journal, ca. 1899.

Translated into German from the original “White House cookbook” first published in 1887, this book served the rising and prospering German-speaking immigrant population of the period.  As the lengthy sub-title tells us, it’s more than just a cookbook –it is an encyclopaedic compendium of recipes for foods, salves and medicaments, lotions and personal products, cleaning and polishing compounds, etc. from the days when every household usually had to make its own such materials.  In addition, it provides information and advice on giving dinners, table etiquette, basic health care, and many other aspects of household management.  The Libraries' copy is in its original publisher’s decorated cloth covers, showing considerable use.

Condition and Treatment:

This book has a late 19th century publishers' binding with a stamped cover and spine.  The pages are very brittle.  Conservators will consolidate the spine and re-attach the cover.  A custom double tray box will be created to house the book.
