Extra binding at the Lakeside press, Chicago

Chicago: R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company, 1925.

R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company, founded in Chicago in 1864 by Canadian immigrant Richard Robert Donnelley, became the Lakeside Printing and Publishing Company in 1870. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the company successfully rebuilt their firm in Chicago and reopened in 1902. Lakeside, a producer of commercial brochures, was also known for its small press fine bindings.  William A. Kittredge, Director of Design and Typography at Lakeside from 1922-1945, commissioned well-regarded artists and designers, such as Rudolph Ruzicka, Edward A. Wilson, and W.A. Dwiggins. This catalog, featuring a decorative cover, includes several examples of the commissioned artists’ fine bindings.

Condition and Treatment:

This is an early 20th century catalog of fine bindings for the Lakeside Press. The decorative paper binding is missing the spine and the paper label is partially missing and detached. The inner front gutter is torn. Several plates are detached and there are minor tears and areas of loss. The interleaving tissue is missing from most of the illustrations. Conservators will create a new spine for the binding and re-attach the label. The inner gutter will be re-enforced and the detached plates re-attached. Tears and areas of loss will be filled. A new clamshell box will be created for the book.
