Genera et species asterearum. Recensuit, descriptionibus et animadversionibus illustravit

By C. G. Nees von Esenbeck. Norimbergae: Sumtibus Leonardi Schrag, 1833.

A German botanist and taxonomist who served as the President of the Akademie der Naturforscher "Leopoldina" (now the German National Academy of Sciences) from 1818 until his death in 1858, Nees von Esenbeck was a prolific researcher who described for science almost 7,000 species of plants. In the present work he set out the first full classification of the large and complex Aster genus. Although much revised by modern research, it still serves as an important reference for Smithsonian botanists studying the group.

Condition and Treatment:

The book is in a binding of half-leather with blue paste-paper over board; the paper is missing from the lower board, and the inner boards, end-leaves, and text-block edges show significant staining from mold. Conservators will remove mold from all surfaces with a HEPA-filter vacuum and create a phase-wrapper for the volume. Conditions in the environmentally controlled vault will prevent future mold outbreaks.
