The Glory of America
The glory of America; comprising memoirs of the lives and glorious exploits of some of the distinguished officers engaged in the late war with Great Britain
“May we not hope…that nation shall not rise against nation[?]” The preface to the The Glory of America hopes for peace, even as the book embarks on a patriotic history of the early United States through the stories of some of its most eminent citizens. Published in 1834, less than 20 years after the end of the War of 1812, this compact biographical anthology describes the “glorious exploits” of many of the Americans involved in that war, as well as those who fought in the Revolutionary War. Included are Andrew Jackson, Zebulon Montgomery Pike, Nathaniel Green, Hugh Mercer, and Charles Lee. There are no portraits of these men, but of note are the dozen engraved scenes of battles both on land and at sea.
The head cap is torn, and the front joint of leather partially split. The damaged areas will be repaired using toned Japanese paper. A bespoke enclosure will be constructed.
