In the Land of Cave and Cliff Dwellers

In the land of cave and cliff dwellers

By Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka. New York: The Cassell Publishing Co., 1893.

U.S. Army Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka became well-known for his many forays into the Alaskan wilderness, including a rafting expedition up the Yukon River that became the longest raft expedition at that time. Due in part to his interests in American Indian languages, botany, and natural history, he traveled to the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1889 and 1890. Schwatka describes the physical features of the land he visited and the Tarahumara people and villages he encountered. The book is more of a travelogue than a scholarly work. The front cover features a gilded sun rising over a tall cliff.

Condition and Treatment:

This is a late 19th-century cloth publisher's binding. The textblock is split in half. The gutters are weak, and the endcaps are damaged. Conservators will resew the textblock, first lining each of the sections with Japanese paper. The cover will be removed from the text and repaired from the inside, including relining the spine and repairing the endcaps.
