Larousse Animal Portraits
Larousse animal portraits
This gorgeous book features modern scientific descriptions of animals alongside 18th and 19th century French illustrations. Written and compiled by Pierre-Paul Grasse, its illustrations are rendered in full detail and color, some by well-known nature artists, such as John Gould. Pierre-Paul Grasse was a French zoologist and an expert on termites. Interestingly, he was also one of the last proponents of Neo-Lamarckian evolution. This book provides an interesting perspective of historical depictions of animals contrasted with modern scientific descriptions and understandings.
