Condition and Treatment:

This is an early 20th-century map of the Panama Canal Zone. The map is brittle to the touch and is reinforced with heavy linen in places. The map has multiple tears. It is folded into a small acidic folder. The map is dirty and has soot damage. Conservators will remove the linen tape and dry clean the map to remove the soot residue. The tears will be repaired with Japanese paper and reversible wheat starch paste. A new, acid-free enclosure will be created to house this fragile item.
