Methodus qua omnes detectos Lichenes. [plates only]
by Erik Acharius. Stockholm, 1803.
Acharius, one of Linnaeus's last students at the University of Uppsala in the 1770's, pioneered the study of lichens (symbiotic combinations of algae and fungus). He established their basic classification, naming hundreds of species and organizing them into 43 distinct genera based on microscopical analysis. This book is a second copy of the plates only, illustrating their anatomical structures in hand-colored engravings, which he drew and (for some of the 800 copies of the work) colored himself.
Contemporary half-leather with black paste-paper over boards and marbled end-papers. Most of the spine is missing save for the gilt leather label. Create a custom clam-shell box to ensure the long-term protection of the volume.
