Moonwatch Newsletter
Moonwatch Newsletter, Vol. XVII, No. 11–Vol. XVIII, No. 7
The Moonwatch Division of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory was created to track and photograph artificial Earth satellites. A key element in accomplishing this mission was the establishment of a worldwide network of volunteer amateur astronomers. These Moonwatch Teams scanned the skies and recorded their observations to be compiled centrally. An annual newsletter, simply titled Moonwatch Newsletter, was written by Division staff and distributed to team members. Newsletters provided updates, shared their collective data, and acknowledged their extensive contributions to science. The 1968 and 1969 newsletters coincide with one of the most significant periods of the Space Race—the Apollo missions and the lunar landings.
