A Nomenclature of Colors for Naturalists

A nomenclature of colors for naturalists and compendium of useful knowledge for ornithologists / by Robert Ridgway ; with ten colored plates and seven plates of outline illustrations

By Robert Ridgway. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1886.

Robert Ridgway, the first full-time curator of birds at the Smithsonian (1880-1929), described and named many new species of birds during his long career. In this work he was very conscious of the difficulty of describing colors for identifying birds, as well as visualizing the color terms used in other ornithologists’ descriptions. He published two books to standardize the vocabulary of colors for naturalists and they are widely used to this day. This copy of his first color book was inscribed by Ridgway to George BrownGoode, an ichthyologist and the Smithsonian’s Assistant Secretary in charge of the National Museum.
