The book was written "with an attempt to explain the causes of the frequent elevation and depression of large portions of the Earth's surface in remote periods, and to prove that those causes continue in action at the present time." The volume also contains a supplement titled: Conjectures on the physical condition of the surface of the Moon.

Condition and Treatment: 

This volume has its original full red cloth binding. There is a binder's ticket on its lower pastedown.  The upper portion of its spine covering and its lower endcap are missing. This book needs the losses on its spine filled with toned Japanese paper and wheat starch paste, as well as, its inner joint reinforced.
