Onomasticon Zoicon
Onomasticon zoicon, plerorumque animalium differentias & nomina propria pluribus linguis exponens : cui accedunt mantissa anatomica, et quædam de variis fossilium generibus
Walter Charleton (1619-1707), an Oxford-educated physician, came to the field of natural history in a way common for his day. In this era, medicine had a sizeable natural history component, as cures relied largely on what could be gleaned from natural sources, rather than chemical formulations. The son of a church rector, he looked at natural history through a theological lens, to search for a “divine pattern” in nature. This work seeks to list and organize “all known animals,” and includes a section on fossils. Charleton advocated for the use of fossils, both ground and whole, for medical purposes.
This volume features a late 17th century full leather binding. The volume has been previously treated and has a spine that is not original to the binding. The spine is suffering from red rot. Conservators will re-back the spine with a leather that better compliments the original leather color.
