By Victor Petit. Paris: Monrocq freres, [185-?].

This beautifully illustrated pattern book, part of a five volume study of mid-19th century French architecture by artist and chromolithographer Victor Petit, includes fifty color lithographs of designs for gardens. The colorful, full-page illustrations provide designs for the placement of paths, flowerbeds, waterways, and garden structures for properties ranging from one sixth of an acre to more than seven and a half acres. Plans with curving walkways and ponds in the English style and the more formal French geometric style are included along with suggestions for the contemporary layout of fruit and vegetable gardens, parterres, belvederes, bridges, glasshouses, and birdcages. The volume is a rare and beautiful example of a French 19th century garden pattern book.

Condition and Treatment:

This book has a mid-19th century publisher's binding with a gold stamped cover. The spine is detached. The text consists of 50 color plates on heavy paper that is oversewn. The oversewing is placing pressure on the plates. Conservators will dis-bind the textblock, releasing the over sewing. The plates will then be placed in Mylar L-sleeves. A double tray box will be created to house the original covers and the plates.
