Design for an interior from Raume und Menschen

Räume und menschen / / Aug. Trueb ; mit einführenden Gedanken von Hanns H. Josten

By Aug. Trueb. Stuttgart: W. Hädecke, 1923.

The Cooper Hewitt Library has a large collection of books on interior design of many countries, eras, and styles. This book discusses the important and influential Art Deco period. It features furnishings, including wallpaper samples, for many different living and working spaces. Extremely bold colors and styles demonstrate great imagination in promoting modern design. August Trueb, German architect and graphic designer, was active in Stuttgart in the 1920s and 1930s.  He was first trained as an architect but later turned to interior decoration, then advertising art. In his career he produced designs for advertising and publicity, including posters, packaging, exhibition display, and logos. His illustrations and graphic designs appeared in international magazines such as Posters and Publicity, Commercial Art, Decorative Art, and Art & Publicity Fine Printing & Design. This publication, with text in German and 25 plates, is the only single book he ever produced.

Condition and Treatment:

This book has an early-20th century half bound bookcloth and cloth binding. The spine is torn at the front and back gutters.  Conservators will reback the book, creating a stronger spine out of airplane linen toned to compliment the original cover color. The original spine will then be reattached over the new spine. A custom double tray box will be created to further protect this fragile book.
