Recueil d'Alphabets
Recueil d'alphabets : dedie aux artistes
A Collection of Alphabets Dedicated to Artists is a small pattern book of decorative and ornamented typefaces for alphabets and numbers. Containing variations of common Roman, Gothic, and Italian letter forms, it offers letters of the alphabet formed by human figures, silhouettes of human figures, and animals. Interestingly, it also has a page of the letters formed by hands in sign language alphabet. In the age of letterpress, and now digital typography, it’s interesting to see manually designed typefaces which artists and designers would have copied and used as sources for printing words and text.
This book has a mid-19th century tabbed binding housed in a modern red buckram case. The paper is brittle and some pages have detached from the tabs. Several plates have previous repairs that are not sympathetic to the plates. Conservators will dis-bind the volume, repair the tears, and remove the previous repairs. New sections will be created using Japanese paper guards which will be sewn through the folds. The volume will then be re-cased and housed in a custom enclosure.
