A Second Century of Orchidaceous Plants
A second century of orchidaceous plants. Selected from the subjects published in 'Curtis' botanical magazine' since the issue of the 'First century.'
James Bateman (1811-1897) was a renowned horticulturist, specifically focused on orchidology. He was a highly regarded researcher and landscaper who promoted the analysis and cultivation of flowers and hosted several scholarly expeditions to Mexico and South America. Not to be confused with Sir William Jackson Hooker’s (1785-1865) First Century in 1849, this volume introduces significant changes to care techniques and cultivation of orchids through his “cool orchid cultivation,” where cool orchids should reside in cooler temperatures versus the hot climate housing solely used for orchids previously. Consisting of 100 beautifully hand-colored plates by Walter Hood Fitch (1817-1892), accompanied by descriptive text including origination and cultivation, this first edition survey of orchids allows the researcher and scholar the opportunity to admire the intricacies of botanical design.
