Sierra Club Bulletin
Sierra Club bulletin, Vol. 11
This collection of articles, photographs, maps, and, yes, advertisements from the early-20th century is a treasure trove for nature lovers and historians. There are stories by men who were the first to ascend daunting mountains, descriptions of the geology and geography of remote western lands, and tales of adventure and discovery. Beautiful black-and-white photographs illustrate most articles. What makes one issue very special in this volume is that it includes the first two published photos by the environmentalist and renowned photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984). He was around 20 years old at the time of the publication. Adams remarks in two pages about the Yosemite excursion where he took one of the photos. In another two pages, he writes a report as custodian of Yosemite's Le Conte Memorial Lodge, including listing the new books in its library.
