Sketches in the Soudan
Sketches in the Soudan
Willoughby Verner, a British military officer, was part of the military expedition (1884-1885) to the relief of Khartoum. En route under difficult circumstances, Verner made drawings in his sketch book, which were later made into color lithographs, thirty-nine of which are in this book. Some are serene desert landscape; others are of warfare.
A folio sized volume in the original binding cloth bound with stamped red leather labels on the spine and front cover. The textblock is oversewn and separating. The oversewing is also causing stress and tearing at the gutter to some of the pages. The gutter is also loose and the last page (an advertising supplement) is torn.
The volume should have a clamshell box created to house it and the repairs to the torn advertising sheet should be executed. The tearing to the pages could only be remedied by disbinding and re-sewing the textblock.
