Zoo in Camera
Zoo in camera
This collection of photographs highlights a very introspective, sensitive aspect to the inner lives of animals. Jan Styczynski provides these gorgeous black and white photographs of animals taken in various Polish zoos during the early 20th century. The animal portraits express a depth of emotion and personality usually reserved for people in photography. Jan Zabinski provides the introduction and animal descriptions throughout the book. Zabinski was a Polish zoologist, the director of the Warsaw Zoo, and a Polish resistance fighter during WWII. He and his wife sheltered hundreds of Jewish refugees during the Holocaust in occupied Poland, both in their home and in the Warsaw Zoo.
