The Caledonian railway, or The Caley as it was fondly named, was a Scottish railway system that connected Scotland to London from the 1840’s until its dissolution in the 1920’s. This compilation of book excerpts, articles, news clippings, and advertisements chronicles and romanticizes the waning decades of the Caledonian Railway from the turn of the century until 1923 when The Caley was absorbed into the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway by The Railways Act of 1921, an act that streamlined 120 individual British railway systems into just four.

From the Ground Up

Arizona is known for its copper mines. This 30-paged booklet contains 15 fascinating stories about the origins of towns and mines in the state of Arizona, including Havasu mine, Vulture Mine, the Bisbee mines, Harquahala mine, and Orphan mine. Compiled by the 13th Governor of Arizona, John Richard Jack Williams, this book was edited when the Governor was 71. Governor Williams was asked to research these mining stories by the Phelps Dodge Corporation, which celebrated its centennial for Arizona mining in 1981. The company was acquired by another Phoenix company in 2007.

The Grammar of Ornament

This was the first encyclopedic pattern book that examined ornament from a variety of cultures and historic periods. Jones created the Grammar to educate designers and stressed the need for a study of historic styles in order to prepare for an ornamental language suitable to the new industrial age. The Grammar was extremely influential in design schools in the latter half of the nineteenth century, and is still in print today, maintaining its relevance as a source of inspiration for contemporary designers.
