De Paris a Samarkand
A travelogue written of Marie de Ujfalvy-Bourdon, De Paris à Samarkand, was published in 1880. Marie de Ujfalvy-Bourdon (1845- 19?? ) traveled with her husband, Károly Jenő Ujfalvy de Mezőkövesd (16 May 1842 – 31 January 1904) who was a noted ethnographic researcher and linguist of Central Asia and the Himalayas. In 1876 he was sent by the French Ministry of Public Education on a scientific expedition to the newly conquered regions of Russian Central Asia. Marie accompanied him on the journey, something that was extremely rare for a woman of that time to do. She recorded their travels.
Gardens For a Beautiful America 1895-1935
This book presents, in all their glory, the hand-colored glass slide photographs of Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952). It is a beautiful pictorial book, yet scholarly and well researched. Johnston was one of the earliest professional American women photographers. She trained as an artist in Paris, studied photography here at the Smithsonian, and began her career doing portrait and news photography.
The Godey's Lady's Book Receipts and Household Hints
The Godey’s Lady’s Book was a widely read journal that pioneered the field of women’s magazines. When first published in 1830, it included mainly images of the current fashions, but later it expanded to include fiction, essays, and recipes. In 1870, the magazine published its first cookbook, The Godey’s Lady’s Book Receipts and Household Hints. The book is a compilation of featured recipes along with a chapter of household and cooking advice. The chapter ends on a playful note with a poem —each couplet is a cooking tip or proverb.
