Picturesque Panama, the Panama railroad, the Panama canal

By Jean Sadler Heald. Chicago: Printed by C. Teich & company, 1928.

Described by its author as a “modest” guide for the short term visitor to Panama, this small delightful book offers a description and brief historical account of Panama, its railroad and Canal, with archival photos and an illustrated fold out map. Writing in a conversational tone embellished with purple prose, author Jean Sadler Heald offers useful information for tourists, waxes equally poetic over tropical vegetation and engineering feats, and offers a fond tribute to her life on the Isthmus as wife of the Superintendent of the Panama Railroad and Steamship Line from 1908-1928. Of particular interest to the Smithsonian collection is the inscribed frontispiece and a photo of researchers on Barro Colorado Island, where the names of Thomas Barbour and Frank Chapman are penciled in by Alexander Wetmore, Secretary of the Smithsonian from 1946-1953.
