Each Smithsonian scholar engages in an individual voyage of discovery using the artifacts and specimens of the Smithsonian Institution in conjunction with the Libraries’ written and illustrated record of the past. The Libraries is uniquely positioned to help scholars understand the continuing vitality of this relationship, via exceptional research resources ranging from 15th-century manuscripts to electronic journals.

The Dibner Library Resident Scholar Program and Baird Society Resident Scholar Program provide support for scholarly research in the Special Collections of the Smithsonian Libraries in Washington, DC and New York, NY, in an extensive range of subject areas. The newly established Margaret Henry Dabney Penick Resident Scholar Program supports longer-term research projects for scholars of early American history.

The Dibner Library Resident Scholar Program

The Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology Resident Scholar Program, supported by The Dibner Fund, awards stipends of $3,500.00 per month for up to six months for individuals working on a topic relating to the history of science and technology who can make substantial use of collections in the Dibner Library. Historians, librarians, doctoral students, and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply. Scholars must be in residence at the Dibner Library during the award period.

Baird Society Resident Scholar Program

The Baird Society Resident Scholar Program was established to support the study of some of SI Libraries’ most unique and valuable holdings: its Special Collections. Stipends of $3,500 per month for up to six months are available for individuals working on a topic relating to these collections. Historians, librarians, doctoral students, and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply. Scholars must be in residence at the Smithsonian during the award period. While the Libraries’ extensive general collections may be used to support scholars’ research, the focus of their projects must center around Special Collections.

Margaret Henry Dabney Penick Resident Scholar Program

The Smithsonian Institution Libraries is pleased to offer a fellowship founded by a bequest of Margaret P. Nuttle. The Margaret Henry Dabney Penick Resident Scholar Program supports scholarly research into the legacy of Patrick Henry and his political circle, the early political history of Virginia, the history of the American Revolution, founding era ideas and policy-making, as well as science, technology, and culture in colonial America and the Early National Period.
