Calendar of Events

In conjunction with the Smithsonian Libraries ongoing exhibition in the National Museum of American History, Paper Engineering: Fold, Pull, Pop & Turn, which runs through September 5, 2011, the Libraries is hosting a calendar of pop-up and movable books events in the Washington DC area.  

Past Events

October 1, 2010 - January 6, 2011

The Children’s Room at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G Street NW, across from the Gallery Place metro stop,  will feature changing exhibits of movable books from the District of Columbia Public Library and private collections. On display from are books that fold, pull, pop and turn to create a dynamic and interactive reading experience. 

November 5-7, 2010

Pyramid Atlantic Art Center presents the 11th Biennial Book Arts Fair and Conference, the preeminent book arts event on the east coast. Now in its third decade, the fair will showcase a dynamic array of innovative book art, limited edition prints, fine papers, and specialty tools along with a rich program of notable speakers, demonstrations, and special exhibitions.

November 10, 2010       

Ellen Rubin, aka the “Pop-up Lady”—"A History of Pop-up and Movable Books: 700 Years of Paper Engineering," Wednesday November 10, 2010, Carmichael Auditorium, National Museum of American History, 12th street and Constitution Ave., NW, Washington, D.C., 12 noon. Sponsored by the Smithsonian Libraries.

November 13, 2010        

Special programs with storytelling using movable books spanning Alice’s subterranean adventures to Star Wars enterprises in outer space will be held on Saturday, November 13 at 11:00 am in Room 200,  Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G Street NW, across from the Gallery Place metro stop. Families are invited to learn about the different types of pop-up and movable books and to experiment with their own exploits in paper engineering.  

December 1, 2010

December 4, 2010
