Ailey Spirit

Ailey Spirit is a reflection of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s amazing journey as it has progressed from “a small group of young, African-American dancers traveling the country in a station wagon, to what we now respect as one of the best modern dance companies in the world.”  Photographs from an array of renowned dance photographers bring to life the performances and artistic creations of every decade and allow us to preview the company’s latest work. The insightful text, written by the late Robert Tracy, a successful dance writer, was developed from unpublished interviews with more than 50 key individuals. This title and others like it are an important companion for library visitors conducting research in the museum’s archival collection of Alvin Ailey photographs.
