Artificial Insemination Clouded Leopard Cubs (Slides)

By JoGayle Howard. 1992.

These slides are from the files of Dr. JoGayle Howard (1951–2011), theriogenologist (veterinary reproductive specialist) at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park and Conservation Biology Institute. Dr. Howard dedicated her career to breeding endangered species in captivity by adapting techniques commonly used for treating human infertility. Much of her research focused on felines and she frequently collaborated with zoos and wildlife conservation organizations throughout the United States, Africa, and Asia. This collection deals specifically with her work on clouded leopards, which culminated in the 2017 birth of the first clouded leopard from artificial insemination using a thawed sample at the Nashville Zoo. Dr. Howard also successfully bred the endangered black-footed ferret, though her most famous work ended in the birth of giant panda Tai Shan in 2005. Howard’s legacy extends beyond the live animals born because of her work, and her research and teaching continue to guide today’s zoo professionals.
