The Astonishing Tale of a Pen & Ink Puppet, cover

The astonishing tale of a pen & ink puppet; or, The genteel art of illustrating, by Oliver Herford.

By Oliver Herford. New York: C. Scribner's sons, 1907.

This delightful and amusing work follows our pen & ink puppet, Bertie Van Ordinaire, a bachelor who falls in love at first sight with two eligible ladies, and struggles to decide who to marry. His journey through such a difficult decision is marked with antics and puns, including time spent pondering in the Arctic Circle, where the narrator notes “he can wear evening dress for six months without disgrace.” Bertie’s story ends with a quite a twist at the end! Oliver Herford's cartoons appeared in journals such as Life, Harper's Weekly, The Masses, and Punch in the early 1900s. He authored several works, including those of his well-known comedienne sister, Beatrice.
