Biographical sketches of the signers of the Declaration of American independence: The declaration historically considered; and a sketch of the leading events connected with the adoption of the Articles of confederation and of the Federal Constitution

By Benson John Lossing. New York: Derby & Jackson, 1857.

We all are familiar with John Hancock and his bold signature on the Declaration of Independence – big enough so that King George could see it without his spectacles, according to legend. But how many of the other 55 signers can you name? This 1857 book provides profiles of each signer from the original thirteen colonies, along with reproductions of their signatures and engraved portraits where possible. The list includes many of our well-known Founding Fathers, such as Thomas Jefferson, principal author of the Declaration; John Adams, second President of the United States; and Benjamin Franklin, politician, inventor, author, and scientist. But it also includes some less familiar but no less colorful personages, like Oliver Wolcott of Connecticut, who served as a major general under George Washington during the Revolution, and Button Gwinnett of Georgia, who was killed in a duel with a political rival.

Condition and Treatment:

This volume has a mid 19th century publisher's binding bound in red bookcloth with blind stamped covers and a gold stamped spine. The textblock is detaching from the covers. The textblock is split in the middle and the paper shows signs of foxing. The cover is damaged at the spine. The frontispiece has a piece of acidic tissue paper protecting it. Conservators will remove the textblock from the case and attempt to reattach the split with out re-sewing the entire volume. The case will be repaired using toned airplane linen. The acidic tissue paper will be replaced with an acid free version. The front endsheet, with a signature, will be retained. The repaired textblock will then be re-cased into the repaired cover.
