Carrie Bow Cay Research Station Logbook

By Visitors to the research station. 1999-2010.

Part visitor register, part community field notes, this "Naturalist's Log" illustrates activities at the Carrie Bow Cay Field Station (part of the Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program administered by the Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce) in Belize. The logbook is a record of all aspects of life on and around the island and includes summaries of research projects, weather observations, wildlife sightings, turtle nesting information, and chronicles of daily activities. Visitors of all ages submitted their species sightings. They wrote about types of wildlife and their behavior, including marine invertebrates (squid, crustaceans, coral, and examples of bioluminescence), birds, fish along mangrove roots and reefs, turtles, and porpoises. Handwritten entries are often accompanied by maps, sketches, and watercolor paintings.
