By Lazzaro Spallanzani. Modena: Presso la Societá tipografica, 1796.

Best known for his studies in volcanology and meteorology, Spallanzani made discoveries and contributions in an extraordinary variety of scientific fields, including animal reproduction and digestive processes, echolocation in bats, the mechanics of stone-skipping, and as here, in a critique of the work of Johann Friedrich August Göttling — phosphorescence and bio-luminescence. His experiments demonstrated the chemical, rather than structural, nature of those phenomena and concluded that the presence of water (specifically oxygen) was required.
